Fried Taco Recipe

Yep, we’re going to make fried tacos.

Trying something fun and different on taco night is always a good thing.

Id a fried taco just a quesadilla? It did seem like a quesadilla cut in half, but the most delicious taco quesadilla ever.

We actually make quesadillas a lot at home, it’s one of the boys favorite dinners. These Chicken Enchilada Quesadillas or Sausage and Peppers Quesadillas, or these Meatball Pizza Quesadillas…we love them all.

So these pan fried tacos are basically a tasty beef taco with a super crispy shell. I guess sort of like a chalupa?

But the best part about these fried tacos, besides the way they taste is that they don’t fall apart when you eat them! That is a taco recipe WIN if you ask me.

How Do You Make Fried Tacos?

These tacos are so easy to make, I promise you’re going to be making them all the time. Just start out by making the beef filling, which has beef, of course, but also diced tomatoes and green chiles.

Get the filling into a bowl and carefully wipe out the skillet with a few paper towels – this is the same pan you’ll be using to make your tacos.

Lay a tortilla down in the pan and add some of the beef filling to one half of the tortilla, then top that with cheese. Lots of cheese…

Flip the empty side of the tortilla over to cover the filling half and press down with a plate or a spatula. Cook for a few minutes until the bottom is crispy then flip the fried taco over to get the other side nice and crispy too.

Can I Use Different Meat For The Taco Meat?

Definitely! Ground turkey or pork will work, even shredded chicken! Leftover chicken or a rotisserie chicken cut up would be awesome in this taco filling.

So although making tacos is super easy, it’s not the hard part. Am I Right?

The hard part about tacos is getting ALL the toppings in little bowls or plates on the table. Because if you’re eating tacos at my house, there’s going to be a lot of topping options.

Which is what makes these pan fried tacos even better – there’s no toppings to set out because all the flavor is on the inside! We also love serving this taco recipe with guacamole, salsa and sour cream on the side for dipping.

    4. Carefully wipe out the skillet with paper towels and spray with cooking spray.
    5. Place a tortilla in the skillet and top one half of the tortilla with about 3/4 cup of the filling and 1/2 cup of cheese.

It's best to fry the tacos shells right before eating. If you wish to make them ahead of time, to keep them crisp, re-heat them in the oven at 375°F for 10 minutes before serving. You can also make the meat up to 2 days in advance.

How to make fried taco shells at home? ›

Heat oil over medium heat in a skillet. Carefully add half of the tortilla (folded into a taco shape) and fry until golden (you will need to hold up the tortilla half the entire time.). Using tongs, carefully flip the tortilla to fry the other side until golden (continue holding the free edge to maintain the shape).

How much oil do you need to fry tacos? ›

How to fry crispy taco shells: Pour about 1/2” inch oil into the skillet and turn the stove on to medium or medium-high heat. Make sure the oil is hot enough (350 to 365 degrees) before adding a tortilla. If the oil is too cool, the tortillas will soak up too much oil.

What is the best oil to fry tacos in? ›

Refined oils such as soybean, corn, canola and grape seed are made for frying. They are neutral in flavor and have a high smoke point which makes them perfect for cooking. What's the best way to cook taco shells without a deep fryer? Fold them over or into something and bake them.

How do you keep taco shells from falling apart? ›

    Sealed, not just folded

Thanks to one hack, there's a method of preventing them from falling apart and it's a bit easier to accomplish than you might think. According to Eat This, Not That!, you can help fortify the structural integrity of your soft shell tacos by pan frying and sealing them before eating.

When making taco meat do you drain the grease? ›

Cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 7 to 10 minutes. Drain and discard any excess grease. Pour water and seasoning mix over beef; stir to combine. Bring to a simmer and cook until mixture thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.

How do you keep taco meat from getting greasy? ›

There are a couple of things that you can do. First buy ground meat that is a better quality 90/10 (90 lean 10 fat) so there isn't as much fat in it to begin with. Second sprinkle the ground meat with a little baking soda and let it set for a few minutes prior to cooking. The meat will brown with less 'grease'.

Do you oil pan for tacos? ›

Depends how crunchy you want the tortilla. For a very crispy finish, you can add a little more oil to the hot skillet before you finish the tacos on it. I like mine crisp but with a little chew. You also can do the whole process with no oil at all.

Why do my tortillas fall apart when I fry them? ›

They crack when too cold, either didn't get heated up enough or have cooled back down. Heat corn tortillas thoroughly over a flame or on a griddle, this takes some patience. Flip them over a few times so they don't burn. Microwaves are right out.

What is the best pan to fry tortillas? ›

Traditionally, a comal (a flat griddle) is used to cook the formed tortillas, but a cast-iron pan works just as well.

Can you fry tacos in olive oil? ›

What is the best oil for frying taco shells? I use light olive oil, but canola oil, vegetable oil, or peanut oil will work, too.

How do you keep fried food crispy after frying? ›

Drain and Cool Properly: After frying, be sure to place your food on a wire rack or paper towel-lined baking sheet. This will help remove excess oil and keep them crisp for longer. Additionally, if you're planning to serve the fried foods later, make sure to cool them in the refrigerator first before reheating.

How do you keep hard taco shells from getting soggy? ›

The best way to prevent soggy tacos is to prepare the fillings separately and only assemble the taco once you're ready to enjoy it. To make sure your crunchy taco shells stay crunchy, store them at room temperature instead of in the fridge.

How do you keep fried food crispy for transport? ›

One of the most important steps in keeping fried food crispy when transporting it is to allow it to cool and drain any excess oil. When fried food is freshly cooked, it contains moisture that can make it lose its crispy texture. By letting the food cool and drain, you can remove excess oil and prevent sogginess.
